Current Coordinates- for me, personalized learning means finding the best way of learning that works best for you. It’s my fourth Year at UVic, and I have realized that whenever I struggle with any topic or concept, I usually go to YouTube.I can find multiple videos explaining the topic and can learn at my own pace. This method really helps me, as I can go back to watch that video anytime for quick revisions, adjust my own speed, and study whenever it works best for me. I also use Reddit and Discord communities for different perspectives and answers whenever needed.
As a computer science student, skills I can offer to the course would be problem-solving skills and learning independently. Also, im really curious how I can use online platforms more intentionally towards my proffesional development.
Mapping the Route
One of the main things I want to explore by the end of this course is how social media decides our feed. I have been using social media for a very long time, but I never thought about why certain videos and posts are on my feed. Im really curious to understand how the algorithms work and how they personalize our online experiences, and how they can affect learning. I think this connects well with the course objective of recognizing that the Internet is not a neutral or equal space for everyone.
Another thing would be learning about GenAI, as these AI tools have become very popular and useful for students from high school to university. It’s really fascinating how they can break down complex topics and concepts and give such good explanations. They help to generate great ideas and provide instant feedback. But I think it’s really important for us to know how to use these Tools without fully relying on them. I want to learn how Gen AI can support my learning and creativity without replacing my own thinking.
Anticipating Turbulence
One of the challenges I expect in this course would be determining the authenticity of the information I found online and understanding the privacy and ownership side of social media. I use social media daily, but I never thought about how the reels or content I share with friends are owned and used by different platforms. Through this course, I plan to navigate these challenges by cross-checking the information via different sources and becoming responsible while sharing something on the internet.
Lastly, I would say I like online courses, but this course would have been more engaging and fun if it were in person. Staying engaged in an online course is challenging for me, so this would be another challenge I expect during this course. I plan to overcome this by trying to be activly participating in every discussion post and staying connected with my classmates through discussion posts and group activities.
