In todays digital world, social media platforms such as Facebook, twitter, linkedin play a important role on how we connect and learn stuff.i have thought about how these platforms make it so easy to connect with people and let us access whatever information we want. However, this weeks readings made me realize that these scoial platforms not only help us connect with people but they also shape our thoughts and preferences through information we see on them.
In the reading The Affordances of Social Media Platforms in The SAGE Handbook of Social Media (Bucher & Helmond, 2018). It discusses how design and features can affect the way people interact with social media platforms and people. This made me wonder whether we really explore the information on our own or just following the steps provided by platforms. A good example for this would be If i just interact with posts related to Computer science and Artificial intelligence. LinkedIn Might just fill my feed with more content related to AI And Computer science jobs. As a Computer science students it helpfull for me. However, I also think that these recommendations might limit what i see on the platform. Another example could be YouTube, which I regularly use to understand difficult concepts. Whenever i watch a programming tutorial, YouTube starts suggesting similar videos related to the concept. Although this makes my learning easier,I sometimes end up watching whatever is recommended instead of searching for something different.
This made me realize the importance of having a diverse and inclusive PLN. Although whatever we see on social media is influenced by our personal interests, because of this we might miss out on different ideas/ perspectives that could have help us learn something new.
