Social Learning Platform Analysis

In today’s digital era, social media platforms play an important role in how people connect to each other, share information and learn new trends. For this assignment, the social learning platform I chose is YouTube.
Although YouTube is mostly used by people for entertainment purposes , but i belive it is one of the biggest informal learning platforms on the internet now. You can find informational videos on any topic on YouTube.Learn from different creators, discussion through comments with other people.

I personally picked YouTube as I have been using it since i was 14 years old. Initially I used it only for watching Comedy vines videos. But since I started my bachelors degreee i have mostly been using YouTube as a learning platform, especially to enhance my Technical skills. As a computer science student, I use YouTube to learn different programming languages, difficult coding concepts and explore new technologies. For instance, whenever i have difficulty in understanding concepts from my lectures, I usually go to youtube and search for tutorials. First, it gives me a variety of videos from different Creators to choose from and study from. Secondly, I can watch them at my own pace and own time. Lastly, I can make my own playlist of such videos and re-watch them whenever I want to revise those concepts.

Another most interesting part of YouTube is the recommendation algorithm, which often suggests related educational videos based on my previous search on my home page. This helps me discover new topics aswell as makes me wonder how much these reccomendation onfluence what i learn.

To analyze YouTube as a social media learning platform, I will be using 3 criteria that I have learned in this course so far. Social media affordances, Personal learning networks, recommendation algorithms and Information credibility. Let’s start with Social media affordances first. Affordance refers to features of the platform that allow users to perform different activities. YouTube provides features such as rewind, subtitles, pause, download and playback speed levels. This also really connects well with UDL principles, which are providing multiple ways for learners to engage with the content.

Secondly, The Personal learning network as it allows people to connect with others and share knowledge and perspectives. I want to see how YouTube helps to support connections between learners and educational creators through comments, polls and subscriptions.

Lastly, recommendation algorithms and Information credibility. YouTube suggests videos related to your history, interests, and your last search via recommendation algorithms.I would like to analyze how this feature influences people’s YouTube home feeds and examine how learners can find educational content reliable.

Platform Analysis

I think everyone would agree that YouTube’s biggest advantage as a learning platform is the flexibility it provides to its users. Unlike regular classrooms, YouTube allows users to pause, rewind, change playback speed, and rewatch videos anytime they want. Example: Whenever im learning a new programming language, I open my code editor and YouTube together and practice at the same time when the instructor in the video is teaching. If I ever miss something or I don’t understand any particular concept, I just go back or find another creator or videos that would help me out. Another helpful feature is that YouTube allows Creators to divide their videos into sections/chapters as well. This helps me to jump directly into the specific concept I want to learn instead of watching the whole long video. However, these feature dont gaurantee the learning, as simply watching tutorials won’t help you learn the language, but practicing it daily will.

Another Intresting Feature of YouTube is the community it brings together. Allows the Users to connect and share knowledge through comments. Unlike regular classes, YouTube allows users/learners to interact with the content creator as well as other fellow learners. This allows the educator to get feedback on their content and what topic they should make the next video on; learners can help other learners in the comment section if they don’t understand. This creates a healthy learning environment where people can learn from each other and different perspectives are also involved. This Supports The Personal learning Network well, helping people build connections, exchange ideas and knowledge and learn through different perspectives. Subscribing to educational channels and participating in discussions through the comment section frequently can help build the network. However, sometimes the information shared in comments can be incorrect, and there is no guarantee that every query will be answered in the discussion post and comment sections. This is the only limitation that YouTube has to offer. Although social learning is always encouraged and provides meaningful interaction, there is no guarantee that these actions will always happen.

Lastly, the Suggestion Algorithm Feature that YouTube provides is also amazing. Whenever im watching videos related to learning coding and Building App projects, etc.YouTube often suggests similar videos which i would never have searched for myself. This way it helps to expand my learning and discover new topics. For example, while watching Python tutorials in my first semster i came across a video Suggesting Web development and how Python is useful in backend systems. This sparked my interest in web development, and then I eventually started making projects related to it, such as a crypto buy and sell website and a Spotify music shuffle website. I believe this type of learning makes the learning journey more beautiful as it encourages you to always explore topics beyond what you intended to learn.

However, the drawback is how much control we have over the content we see. YouTube suggestions are based on individuals’ interests and previous watching history. We might keep seeing similar types of content in the Home Screen. Lastly, not every video will provide up-to-date information. For example, a video that was uploaded 15 years ago on coding might not be that relevant for you today, as technology is constantly evolving. However, YouTube also provides an option to filter search results by upload date, allowing learners to find more recent tutorials

REFLECTION

After analyzing YouTube as a social media learning Platform, I can say that it is more than just an entertaining platform. YouTube provides opportunities for people to learn skills, share knowledge and connect with people with different perspectives, ideas and regions through communities. What I think is the most interesting part is how my own journey on YouTube has evolved over the years from watching it for entertainment to using it as my personal tutoring agent. Overall, I believe it is a great Resource for learning, but its effectiveness depends widely on the way we use it.
